Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. There is currently no cure for this disease and its impact on the daily lives of those suffering is massive.
11 years ago, in his early 50s, my dad was diagnosed with MND and amazingly is not only still here today, but is also still able to walk (albeit with difficulty). However, as I said before, there is no cure and so my dad's MND will progress just like every other individual living with the disease.
Charities such as the Motor Neurone Disease Association offer invaluable support to those with the disease, fund research and are working hard to raise awareness.
I am running the 10 mile Great South Run not only for my fantastic dad, but also for every other person living with MND, in the hope that one day they will find a cure.
I also pledge to donate £150 myself if the £750 target is reached!
