I am doing this tandem skydive as my fiance Richard has end stage renal failure and without the research that Kidney Research do I believe his life would be more limited then it is now. Not much is known about kidney failure and the recent stories in the soaps couldnt be any further from the truth. If you have time google about it and dialysis and have a read up. You will see the way it was portrayed in Eastenders and the likes is completely false. My fiance Richard spends 16 hours a week in hospital on haemo-dialysis, you are laid in a hospital bed attached to a machine that takes blood out of your body and cleans it and puts it back in, this is broken down into 4 days a week 4 hours each session. He cant work due to the time spent in hospital and the way that dialysis affects his body and his day to day life. He's been on dialysis for nearly 10 years now and on the waiting list for a transplant for 3 years. Imagine having to spend this much time in hospital? Having to make arrangements to do anything weeks in advance to ensure you can change your session? Try being restricted to only drinking 1 litre of fluid daily, this has to include the water needed for all the tablets you need to take, measure a litre of water out, its not a lot is it? Having to restrict certain things in your diet like phosphates and potassium which are present in a lot of foods, eating these can cause all sorts of problems from itching skin to aching muscles to a bad heart. Imagine waking up in hospital on your 32nd birthday after having a stroke and having to learn to walk, talk and do things for yourself again, your kidneys do a lot more than just help get rid of the waste from your body, they control your blood pressure too. This charity is very much close to my heart and Im asking for my friends, family and colleagues to help me raise as much money as possible to keep funding the great research they already do.
