We provide free accommodation for families to keep them close to their sick child

Story

Over the past few years I have been on an incredible journey with Storm Family Martial Arts learning Kickboxing. I have knuckled down and progressed through the belts and this year is the greatest challenge of all - my black belt.

As well as 17 hours of physical tests we also take this opportunity to give back and raise money for charity. I will be embarking on the Thames Path Challenge 50km from Runnymede to Henley on Sunday 10th September to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Ronald McDonald House Charities UK provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families with children having treatment in hospital. Our Houses offer much more than just a place to stay; they provide family activities, peer support, respite, and many other services. This means that families can be by their child’s bedside in a matter of moments, whilst maintaining a degree of normal life with reduced emotional and financial strain. We help over 6,000 families each year and now, more than ever, we need your support. Thank you.

A few years ago our eldest son Jamie was rushed to Frimley hospital with appendicitis. His condition rapidly deteriorated and he was rushed to Southampton children’s hospital by ambulance to get the specialist care he needed.

My husband Simon was able to stay with Jamie and sleep by his bedside for the 3 weeks he was in hospital, however there was understandably only space for 1 parent. As I was exclusively feeding our other 3 month old son Freddie it couldn’t be me. Living 45 minutes away, the thought of not being on hand for Jamie when he was so unwell was unbearable.

Ronald McDonald house were truly amazing and gave myself and baby Freddie a room to sleep in for the entire time Jamie was in hospital at no cost. The relief and strain that took off our family at such a scary time was an absolute god send. An incredible team of people helped us settle in, we had kitchen facilities and were only a 2 minute walk from the ward.

We cannot thank Ronald McDonald Charities enough for the kindness and stability they gave us at such a difficult time.
