As some of you may know I was one of eight lucky students from Excelsior Academy to embark on a marvellous trip to the Himalayas, and reach Everest Base Camp. This trip of a life time took 18 months to plan. In this time we had to raise the money for our trip my taking on many different challenges such as the three peaks (Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike) we had to climb up and down all three mountains in under 24 hours. We successfully completed this in 21 hours and 47minuites. One other challenge we completed was a rowing challenge where we had to row the equivalent length of the British Channel (21 miles) these are just two of the many ways we raised out money.
We set off our journey on Saturday the 11th of October from Manchester airport. When eventually arriving in Nepal after several hours in airports and on planes we were shocked by the people and the conditions, how different it was in Nepal compared to back in England. Seeing poverty to such extremes first hand made me realise how lucky I have it back at home compared to other people half way around the world. Seeing this touched me very greatly.
On the 25th of April 2015 an earthquake hit Nepal with a magnitude of 7.8, with several aftershocks, this caused great devastated to many of the lives in Nepal, making the conditions harder to survive in. More than 6000 people have died and nearly 14,000 are injured, with many still being found and rescued. After seeing the devastating images of Kathmandu and me knowing what the conditions were like before the quake struck is extremely upsetting. There was a lot of poverty; people sleeping on the streets, begging, and many shanty towns before the quake now there are many, many more.
We would like us to raise as much as we can to be able to change a person’s life and enable them to have a brighter future, providing clean water and warm clothing, then contributing toward housing.
