Story
Hello!
I know you must be constantly bombarded with emails asking for sponsorship, so I hope you will excuse me for letting you know about a challenge that I am undertaking, for what I believe to be a very special cause.
On the 1st of August I will be running an Ultra Marathon in aid of the organization ‘For Rangers’ (https://www.forrangers.com). This Ultra Marathon will take place in Northern Kenya and will be a 5-day challenge, whereby we will be running through the bush for a total of 230 kilometers. We have to carry all our own equipment and food for the entire race, having run the Lewa Marathon and now at the ripe age of 64, I know that this will be a big test of my stamina and commitment to the cause.
The reason I am doing the For Rangers challenge is simple. I am fortunate enough to live on Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, one of the most pristine and beautiful conservation areas in Africa, and to spend much time working with and training rangers. Very often we all forget about the Rangers who, spend all day and some nights out in the wilderness in order to protect the wildlife that we enjoy and can view in safety. These men and women, are not only in danger from the animals that they serve to protect, but also from the poachers who are often better equipped than the Rangers themselves. This extraordinary ‘silent’ war not only protects the endangered species and other wildlife, but also contributes very significantly to the general security in many areas, benefitting communities as well. It is not a front line that many people get to know about, let alone to see and rarely does it receive much press.
These rangers quietly put their lives on the line in order to save Africa’s wildlife. Since 2003 over 1,000 rangers have lost their lives in the line of duty. It is one thing to put your life on the line for your
country, but it is another thing altogether to do so in protecting wildlife. The Rangers in some areas in Africa have the most basic of equipment, healthcare , support and no medical or life insurance. For Rangers
is passionate about providing the support necessary to give rangers all over Africa a stronger safety net and better equipment. In the event of a Ranger losing his life, support for his wife and the continued education of his children can be made possible through donations to this cause.
Any donations or sponsorship would be extremely welcome. Remember
a pair of boots and a decent pair of socks alone, could change the life of a Ranger who has to walk many miles a day along rough and inhospitable terrain.
Thank you very much for reading this, any contribution will make a difference.
With best wishes
Charlie
