Story
Three young adults and myself will be running the Bupa 10k in London on 27th May. We have chosen to support the Tom Clabburn Memorial Fund administered by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). We have chosen to do this to raise awareness and money to help CRY prevent deaths in the future from this undiagnosed heart disease. PLEASE SPONSOR US at http://www.justgiving.com/Charlie-Pearson0
Since Tom died in 2007, the Tom Clabburn Memorial Fund has had sponsored screenings in 2009 and 2010. More than 550 people have been tested. For most the result is the reassurance of knowing all is well but at each screening young people have been referred for further tests. At least one person is understood to have had life-saving surgery.
Screenings are vital because they give people a chance. The catch is that most young people do not have symptoms and so are not tested by the NHS. Even if they do have symptoms, a heart condition is often not suspected - largely because they are young. Either way, young people are not diagnosed - and when catastrophe occurs very few get a second chance.
People can get tested privately for between £300- £400, but with no symptoms, why would you have a test?
This year the cost of screening 100 people in a day is £3,500 (£35 per person) and comes from fundraisers like myself and many others. Your money does not only goes towards screenings but also upgrading the equipment needed for testing, such as ECG machines, Holter machines and portable ECHO machines and research programmes into the genetics behind the heart conditions.
Paul Clabburn, Tom's Dad; " Most people haven't heard of CRY. We hadn't. We wish we had."
Tom was very close to all of us and is still remembered, so please be generous and support this great cause!
Thank you!
