Story
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is an amazing charity that uses sailing to support, encourage and rebuild the confidence of young people in recovery from cancer and leukaemia.
After the first day of introductions to the week ahead, the next 3 days are spent sailing around Cowes (IOW) or Largs (Scotland), mooring in a different port each night, with endless games of uno and articulate, ice cream, water fights, crabbing and fishing and so much more...
For lots of young people, a 4-day trip might be the first time that they’ve been away from home since treatment or met other people who have been through something similar to them. This is a huge part of what makes the trust trips so powerful, offering a positive and safe environment for an amazing adventure, focusing on what each young person can do, rather than what they can’t, challenging self perceptions and learning new skills as part of a team, helping to rebuild confidence and just have fun! The trust trips are absolute magic and it’s true testament to how life changing those four days can be that so many young people come back as graduate volunteers, in a unique position to inspire, support and encourage other young people in understanding exactly what they have been, and are still going through.
If you want to know a bit more about what the Trust do and see for yourself how wonderful they are, their beautiful website can be found at: https://www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org with lots more information and inspirational stories...
Any donations or support are hugely appreciated and will make an immeasurable difference to a young person's life.
Here's to the 65 miles (between the 3 of us!) we've got to cover.
