Story
I am cycling 400kms from London to Paris with 2 friends in aid of Freedom from Torture. Freedom from Torture is the only UK-based human rights organisation dedicated to the treatment and rehabilitation of torture survivors. The charity works to rehabilitate and protect those who were forced to flee their country because of the horrendous events they experienced.
I have experienced the charities work first hand as my family has been fortunate enough to offer a Cornish break to survivors who have made it to the UK but often remain isolated. Every single Somali, Iraqi, Iranian, Kurdish, Pakistani and others who have stayed with us have all wished to work and contribute. However, having fled their incredibly grave circumstances, leaving behind families and possessions, they are only left with a further mountain to climb as they battle to achieve asylum. You cannot work whilst applying for asylum so more often than not, asylum seekers are left in very basic accommodation on their own with no means of earning and a huge amount of time to think about previous events...
“They say torture is an act of killing someone without their dying. I am still alive, but inside I feel no life. I don’t know who I am anymore”. Amir, Middle East.
Freedom from Torture provides a lifeline to these individuals. Unfortunately, they do not have the resources to help all of the individuals referred to them so I am cycling to Paris which is about 130km a day over 3 days to raise money to support this amazing work. Please donate whatever you can to this very worthy cause.
