This year we will be raising money for the Disasters Emergency Committee through another hat tournament on Clapham Common!
DEC brings together 13 leading UK aid charities in times of crisis. They respond to disasters in the world's poorest countries. Since their launch in 1963, they have run 70 appeals and raised more than £1.4 billion - saving millions of lives and rebuilding communities devastated by disasters.' In the past month, hundreds of thousands of people have fled violence in Rakhine state, Myanmar, with the majority seeking refuge in Bangladesh. More than 500,000 people, mostly Rohingya women and children, are in urgent need of shelter, medical care, water and food as they arrive exhausted and traumatised in overflowing camps and settlements in Bangladesh.
With more funds, DEC member charities can immediately respond to the growing needs of the half a million people who have fled into Bangladesh with nothing, as well as help the overstretched communities hosting them. Attending our event and donating is a small step to helping this effort!
