Story

UPDATE: Our final totals were 24 climbers, 7168m climbed in total and more than double our target raised! Thanks to all who took part, supported us and to Leeds Wall for giving us free run for the day! You can still support us through this site - all donations gratefully received.

On 28 November 2010, 18 climbers from Calderdale and Kirklees are getting together in teams to climb the same height as some major big wall climbs in a day. We're able to do this through the kind suppport of The Leeds Wall, who are letting us in free to climb.

The event is in memory of Colin Alker, one of the founder members of the Calderdale Mountaineering Club. Colin was always up for having some fun and a new adventure - usually with a big grin on his face.

Colin died of pancreatic cancer in 2006, aged just 36. One of Colin's ambitions, which he never had the chance to fulfil, was to do a big wall climb - such as the The Nose on El Capitan, in Yosemite.

So we're going to do some for him - even if indoors and on plastic holds!

We've got three teams planning to climb the same height as the Nose, which at 900m will be 65 Leeds Wall routes. Two other teams are aiming for the South Face of Washington Column, at 335m, 23 times up Leeds Wall. One team will climb the Lost Arrow Spire (425m or 30 Leeds Wall routes) and another team will tackle the Moonlight Buttress in Zion National Park in Utah (365m or 26 Leeds Wall routes). Our total will be over 4000m - half the height of Annapurna!

We're raising the money for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund because more research to improve diagnosis and treatment of the disease is desperately needed. Survival rates for pancreatic cancer haven't improved in 40 years - most diagnoses come too late for surgery or other treatments to be effective. This was the case for Colin - and we want to help the PCRF ensure that those diagnosed in the future get a better chance.

Each team member is raising money individually - but please donate here if you'd like to sponsor us all!

Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is the only national charity dedicated solely to beating pancreatic cancer through research. Survival rates are low, so new research is vital. In the past, this cancer received little attention. With your help, we can change this so more people beat pancreatic cancer.
