Story
For those of you who aren’t already aware, my lovely mum was diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer at the beginning of December. She had surgery on the 29th December (which only added to the festivities of 2020!) and has now recently started chemotherapy before radiotherapy. This has been understandably a very difficult and worrying time for us all, however my mum has taken everything that has been thrown at her with her usual wacky ways!
I’ve therefore decided if she is able to take all of this in her stride, I may need to take on a challenge my self as well! I have signed up for a charity place in the Brighton Marathon raising money for Breast Cancer Now. This will hopefully go ahead on Sunday 12th September 2021, and if not, it will be rearranged for April 2022.
Breast Cancer Now fund research into preventing, curing and living well with the disease, as well as providing life changing care for the physical and emotional impacts to everyone involved. Every year we lose 11,500 people to breast cancer, and the charity is committed to working until everyone survives the disease and is supported to live well. When I first enquired with the charity about the marathon, the first thing they did was signpost me to support and wish my mum well, which made my decision really easy!
The care my mum has received from the NHS has been fantastic. From her initial appointments with the GP, to follow ups at Torbay Breast Clinic, surgery at Mount Stuart and now treatment in the Ricky Grant Unit at Torbay Hospital, she has been treated not only quickly, but with the highest levels of care and compassion. Through running the marathon and raising money for Breast Cancer Now, I hope that I can contribute to funding research that supports all individuals given a breast cancer diagnosis receiving the same outstanding level of care my mum has experienced.
My current fundraising target is £450. I totally appreciate it is a difficult time for many for a number of reasons, especially financially, but any donation you can make would be gratefully received. There’s also a lot to say for words of support and encouragement too (I think I might need those a bit more!).
