Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
For those of you who don’t know my mother, Penny, was injured by a horse in February 2014 and suffered a C6/7 complete fracture of her spine which resulted in her being completely paralysed from the chest downwards. We sadly lost my mum in July 2017, as a result of complications from her injuries.
My mum spent over 6 months in Salisbury Hospital, the Spinal Injuries Unit for the South West, following the accident. The time spent in the hospital was extremely challenging and made more bearable by having access to the wonderful garden and amenities provided by the charity.
For those of you who knew my mum, she loved nothing more than being outdoors, so having a garden which she could visit during this difficult time, was a small piece of joy to her day.
The garden allowed you take the hospital beds and wheel chairs outside so that all patients could experience the fresh air and beautiful surroundings of the garden.
It is also proven that spending time in a green space or bringing nature into your everyday life can have a hugely positive effect on your mental health, which I think is so important for anyone going through a similar journey to what my mum did. These small things can have a big impact of peoples lives and wellbeing through such a terrible time.
The charity is now making wheelchair accessible gardens within all the spinal units in the United Kingdom. The gardens require constant maintenance and improvements. For example they have now built a wheelchair accessible conservatory in the garden at Salisbury. These things can only be achieved by fundraising support.
The charity is supported in the majority by volunteers.
Now it’s time for me to take on a challenge to raise funds for such a worthy cause in loving memory of my beautiful mum, Penny.
