I will start with a quote from Kofi Annan
I decided to challenge myself to a very bike ride, having managed to do Brighton last year - so this time its to Paris, over 4 days around 400k. Fergus liked the idea and said he is coming with me - so that is great and will help to motivate me for the difficult training for the next 3 months. So we have one very fit boy and one very unfit mum!
The charity that has touched our hearts and we have chosen to support on this ride is http://www.build-africa.org/
which is about empowering communities to build schools for children and also to create small business initiatives for women. Many girls stop their education when they reach puberty, and have their own children. This organisation will help them to complete their education before making choices about their lives, learning how to prevent HIV infection empowering them to make life choices. The economic impact of this on their country can be counted in millions, every for each year they continue full time education. Sometimes this is a simple as providing a supply of sanitary towels every month to ensure that school continues, uninterrupted...
We are asking everyone to give just a small amount, as we have lots of friends and guess that a fiver is not going to hurt anyone too much. Of course if you really like the idea and the great charity, you are most welcome to give more ;D. We were thrilled when John Cleese gate crashed our small drinks party at the Motcomb St shop and donated £60 on the spot.
Fergus is officially too young for this challenge at 14, but I am vouching for his fitness and mental ability to stick with this task, and I know he will help me hugely too.
