Ash will complete a fantastic five day trek along this magnificent structure, over watchtowers and mountains, through historic battlements and to the top of the ‘Heavenly Ladder’ at Mutianyu. He will place his own brick in a section that is currently being restored, ensuring that St Raphael's imprint is left on the Wall for all time. But, he can't conquer the twists, turns, steps and slopes of this formidable fortification without your help!
Ash will spend 18 moths training. Having lost 3.5 stone so far, he hopes to focus mentally and physically now with this ultimate in challenges, trekking along one of the most incredible building projects the world has known; constructed by human hands over 2,000 years ago. It stretches across a hilly region with long tentacles often disappearing into the haze.
This challenge will be the most physically demanding event of Ash's life but offers him some fabulous, never ending scenery and a fascinating insight into a rich culture and history while supporting a fantastic hospice.
Walking is partly on flagstones of various conditions on the Wall, and partly on paths through woodland or farmland. At times it will be rough and rocky underfoot, at other times it can be muddy. There are also many steps - perhaps up to 2500 a day!
Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Every journey starts with a single step!
Lets make a difference together! As a locally based hospice, serving a fairly small area, they have advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, there are a great many local people who know about St Raphael’s and the hospice services we offer because they know, or have known, one of the 1,000 patients they support each year.
...And in over 25+ years, they have helped more than 10,000 local people and their families. On the other side of the coin, they need to raise over £5 million a year, every year, mainly from a fairly small geographical area – the London Borough of Sutton and the London Borough of Merton.
