Story
On Sunday 5th August 2018, staff from Norfolk County Council’s Community & Environmental Services team will take to the streets of Norwich to help raise funds for a landmark project to transform Norwich Castle Keep. Taking part in the Run
Norwich 10K, this competitive bunch will pass the castle keep twice on their
route: firstly at around the two-kilometre mark and again once they embark on
the final kilometre of the race. Please give generously to support their
efforts, and don’t forget to come and cheer them along on the day of the race!
Norwich Castle has been a part of the city’s skyline for over 900 years, and in that time has taken on several guises. Built as a palace in the wake of the Norman Conquest, the castle subsequently became a prison before becoming a museum in 1894.
The Norwich Castle:
Gateway to Medieval England project represents this iconic building’s
latest transformation, and will restore the keep to its original palatial appearance whilst making the structure more accessible than ever before. New lifts will enable full access to all five levels of the redeveloped keep, providing step-free access for visitors from basement to battlements.
A new Early Years gallery for under-7s, new creative digital and learning spaces, and a dedicated entrance for school groups will allow up to 30,000 schoolchildren per year to experience the castle as it would have appeared in the 12th century.
A brand-new gallery created in partnership with The British Museum will allow medieval objects of national significance to be displayed alongside medieval objects from Norfolk collections, and establish a presence for the national museum in the East of England.
As well as a brand new café and shop, facilities within the
museum will also be upgraded including new toilets as well as Changing Places
and baby-changing facilities.
The Norwich Castle:
Gateway to Medieval England project will allow visitors of all ages to experience the museum as never before, and represents a new stage in the life of this truly remarkable landmark.
