Story

IN MEMORY OF ETIENNE HICKS AND BEN MILLARD

Cathy Hicks and Sharon Summerill  both work for Waitrose in Clifton Bristol - and they have both lost loved ones to SUDEP - Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy. Sharon lost Ben, her nephew, who was 19, on June 9th 2010 and Cathy lost her son Etienne who was 12, on April 2nd 2011. They are planning, with a small team from Waitrose, to run the Bristol Half Mararton to raise money and awareness for Epliepsy Bereaved.

ETIENNE HICKS     17.6.1998 - 2.4.2011

In 2007, when Etienne was 8, he became critically ill with encephalitis. He spent 5 weeks in intensive care and 3 more months in hospital. He made slow but steady progress, overcoming many difficulties, but was left with a brain injury which among other problems, left him with epilepsy that was hard to control. In spite of all this, he was undaunted, funny, mischevious, affectionate and always brave. He loved being with his sisters, he loved Harry Potter (especially Fred and George), and he loved football which he played for his brilliant school Westhaven in Weston super Mare. We miss him every single day.

BEN MILLARD  13.9.1990 - 09.06.2010

Ben suffered from epilepsy all his life, but he never let it get him down. He enjoyed playing darts for the local teams and also the county. He loved any type of sport, played football for a team and enjoyed a kick around with his mates. Ben was a very loving warm kind person who loved everyone. A wonderful son, brother and friend who is greatly missed.

Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is uncommon but it is a recognised syndrome where a person with epilepsy dies suddenly and no other cause of death is revealed. Around half of epilepsy deaths are attributed to SUDEP.

EB is committed to preventing SUDEP and other epilesy related deaths through research, awareness and influencing change.

The charity is working in partnership with Kings College Hospital London with the aim of finding ways to prevent SUDEP
