Story
Unfortunately, last November my wonderful dad received a shock diagnosis of Myeloma, an incurable form of blood cancer.
He bravely endured a harrowing bone marrow biopsy, along with a host of tests and scans to confirm the extent of the cancer. He has suffered through almost 3 months of aggressive chemotherapy, with a side serving of relentless insomnia, fatigue and breathlessness, to where we are now.
More rounds of extremely high dose chemotherapy will be needed to reach the point where there are no signs of active myeloma. This means healthy stem cells will be sacrificed - taking with them any immune response dad has left. Therefore, in the coming months, he will hopefully be approved for a gruelling stay in the hospital for an autologous stem cell transplant.
It’s been a tough few months for him, especially with mum’s long-awaited hip replacement being scheduled right in the middle of his treatment and my move back to university. However, he has barely complained and always kept a brave face, even on his trickiest days. We couldn’t be any prouder of his courage and spirit if we tried.
A few friends and I will be running the Great North Run this September to raise awareness and funds for Myeloma UK. This charity provides help and support to sufferers and families/friends as well as developing new effective treatments.
