Story
We will be Running (or Walking) to Cure HD in the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon on June 4, 2017 to help raise money to cure Huntington's disease. This is near & dear to our hearts.
Just a few decades ago, we established life long friends at Helix High School. A group of us still keep in touch and walk our lives together. We meet about once a month for dinner to catch up with each other. In 1999, one of us, Ramona Johnston, was diagnosed with HD. We remember Ramona explaining the surprising diagnosis. As the months and years passed, we watched as she lost control of her muscles and cognitive skills. Now Ramona receives 24 hour care at Edgemoor Hospital. She can no longer walk, talk, chew or swallow. This beautiful and charming friend, that was so quick-witted, cannot communicate. As a group we visit Mona and sit around and talk with each other about our lives, our kids, our work, and sometimes Ramona tries to share something, but we cannot understand her. Sometimes she laughs and that feels good. Those good moments are fewer. Most of the time Ramona seems happy to see us, but her greatest joy is when her husband Bill or one of her kids show up during our visit. The love is still there. Bill visits every day.
HD is a dreadful disease that is taking our friend and thousands like her. Bill has been Running to Cure HD since 2001. Their daughter, Hayley, joined him in 2009. So, Bill & Ramona's Helix High School friends are overdue! We are ready to Run (or Walk) to Cure HD! We want to do whatever we can.
Huntington's disease is a hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is no effective treatment or cure. HD is a debilitating disease that combines symptoms of Parkinsons, ALS and Alzeimer's . HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, talk, eat and reason. Children of a parent with HD have a 50% chance of inheriting this deadly disease. This frightens us.
Your support means the world to us. Please consider making a pledge and helping us make this the last generation with HD. Your contributions are tax deductible (Tax ID 13-3349872). We will proudly wear your names on our backs and be grateful, every step we take.
Thank you!
Ramona's friends, Tina McLin & Catharine Hughes
