Cath’s Cleveland Way
Update 19.01.12: My sister Wendy will now be joining me each step of the Cleveland Way - Happy days :-)
I’ve been thinking about returning to my long-lost passion for walking and today I have made the decision to do the Cleveland Way Walk. Being a sufferer of Fibromyalgia for the past 5 years (probably longer, but I was diagnosed 5 years ago) I am all too aware of the need to ‘pace myself’ and it is because of this mantra that I will attempt the Walk in 10 sections. As any fellow Fibro-sufferer will know, the prospect of walking 110 miles in 5 or 7 days back-to-back is, for many of us, out of the question. Once-upon-a-time I would have thought that it was that way or no way, but I see things differently now, and so I will do the walk in sections over a period of weeks (when I feel able to walk the said distances, and by giving myself chance to recover between them).
I would really welcome your support in raising some money for the Fibromyalgia Association UK – so many people have either not heard of Fibro’ or do not understand it – together we can raise awareness of this often debilitating condition, and at the same time raise some money toward further research and support for sufferers.
I have split the Cleveland Way Walk into ten manageable sections as follows:
1. Helmsley to Sutton Bank (8 miles)
2. Sutton Bank to Osmotherley (14 miles)
3. Osmotherley to Great Broughton (11 miles)
4. Great Broughton to Great Ayton (13 miles)
5. Great Ayton to Saltburn (11 miles)
6. Saltburn to Staithes (8 miles)
7. Staithes to Whitby (12 miles)
8. Whitby to Ravenscar (10 miles)
9. Ravenscar to Scarborough (11 miles)
10. Scarborough to Filey (12 miles)
Total distance is 110 miles
I am preparing for the Walk by gradually increasing my ‘steps per day’ using my pedometer and hope to be ready to start the sections by early Spring 2012. I’ve given myself around 12 weeks within which to complete all 10 sections although this is flexible, as Fibro-flare-ups are unpredictable. What is important is that I raise awareness of and money for the Fibromyalgia Association and its members.
Please keep in touch to see how I’m getting along – this walk might not sound like a big deal but it is a huge milestone for me, well, 110 small ones actually J
