The Challenge

This summer, I plan to do a series of extreme hikes, in order to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support (see below for my reasons).  Initially I will be completing the South Coast mighty hike from Brighton to Eastbourne in June and the Lake District mighty hike from Dalemain to Lowther Castle in July.  Both of these routes are 26 miles (yes, that is the correct unit - 41.8km if you prefer), so I will essentially be hiking a marathon in a day each time.  I might throw in the Jurassic Coast mighty hike too, just for fun.

These events are really just warm-ups / training for the main event - in the summer holidays, I plan to complete the Tour de Mont Blanc - a 106 mile (or 170km) hike through the alps around the base of Mont Blanc.  It's a circular route, with 6.6 miles (10.6km) in altitude gain (and loss) altogether, and it should take me 11 days (so I'll be climbing on average roughly a km each day).

This is really going to hurt!

Those of you who know me will be aware that I like my numbers.  Believe me when I say that I will be mentally calculating the amount raised per mile hiked so far, then converting it into amount raised per km hiked when my legs really start to hurt (this may be the sort of thing that caused my brother to nickname me Rainman).  You may not believe it, but this will actually help me up the mountains.  The larger the numbers, the more motivated I will be!

I should also add that none of the money raised will be paying for my accommodation, food or travel or any other expenses.  I'll be paying for all of that from my own pocket.  The money will be going straight to Macmillan through JustGiving.

MacMillan Cancer Support

Many of you will be familiar with the work that Macmillan do.  They have worked with various friends and family members over the years.  When the nightmare scenario becomes reality, they become your guardian angels.  They are there to support both patients and carers in more ways than can be listed during the darkest times of treatment.  They allow you to make the choices that are right for you when there are no more decisions to take.  They gave my brother the freedom to leave hospital and be home when the end came.  Many moons ago, they gave my Granny outstanding palliative care when she went into a hospice.  They are amazing.

Macmillan Cancer Support are here to help you find your best way through from the moment of diagnosis, so you’re able to live life as fully as you can. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs.
