Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Florence, was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2019, Florence was amazing, so brave, well behaved and did everything that was asked of her through the whole examination process. It came to our attention, after a Young Epilepsy parents meeting, that there was a project that would help children in their examination process called the MEG Project.
What is MEG?
MEG (Magnetoencephalography) is a neuroimaging tool that records brain function by measuring changes in magnetic fields rather than changes in electrical signalling during a seizure, like EEG. Current MEG systems are large, expensive to run and are not suitable for children and young people with complex needs. They require patients, including very young children, to be perfectly still in a highly uncomfortable and unnatural environment. Any movement from the patient can significantly reduce the accuracy of the recordings and make the images unusable. To overcome this, many patients are sedated during their scan.
What the solution.…?
Young Epilepsy is working in partnership with UCL Institute of Neurology, University of Nottingham and Magnetic Shields to develop a cutting-edge wearable MEG. This medical breakthrough will achieve transformative change for the wider health sector by making MEG an accessible brain imaging tool for the accurate diagnosis and evaluation of children and young people with epilepsy.
This cutting edge wearable MEG system will have the following impact:
Provide freedom to move about during the scan
Provide greater clarity and accuracy than the old MEG system
Provide an easier and less stressful experience for patients
Be less expensive to operate than previous MEG systems
Pioneer the technology for UK hospitals
Increase the opportunity for early intervention
Give more young people the option to have surgery
This is what your generous donation could go towards
£100 – An activity box for a child to help them feel at ease during their scan
£500 – One of the essential items needed to furnish the room where the MEG scan takes place – like a sofa to sit with parents, a games table or an interactive projector
£2,000 – Vital technology equipment to support the reading of the images
£5,000 – One of the 66 sensors needed for the wearable MEG system
£20,000 – Four of the 66 sensors needed for the wearable MEG system
