We provide support, training & consultation to help the LGBT+ community of Derbyshire
Story
More and more people are aware of Chesterfield’s amazing pedigree on inclusion and equalities.
Those commitments are rooted in the development of workers rights in the 19th and the formation of Trade Unions, articulated in the establishment of Chesterfield Campaign for Homosexual Equality, and sustained today through the work of Derbyshire LGBT+.
Derbyshire LGBT+ work with an office and facilities at Rutland Road, Chesterfield. They work with the Borough Council and with the County Council to make the town and all of its communities stronger, fairer and more equal. That work is ongoing day in and day out and has been critical support for many young people during the many months of lockdown.
A lesser known story is the astonishing work and advocacy of pioneer and campaigner Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) who lived in Millthorpe and worked in Chesterfield for 40 years. His story and that of his same sex partner George Merrill is one of honesty, bravery and of the battle for hard won changes for LGBT+ communities at the start of the 20th century. Whilst Oscar Wide was imprisoned and much of gay London had to flee to Paris, Edward and George lived full and open lives in public and plain sight in Derbyshire with the full support of their neighbours and acquaintances.
The annual Edward Carpenter Equality Walk takes place between Chesterfield and Millthorpe each year to raise money for Derbyshire LGBT+. This year the walk is on Sunday 27thAugust.
