Story
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever.Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
Rita (aka Nanny Swing to Immy and Hannah) has suffered from vascular dementia for a couple of years and now lives in residential care. Mother of five, wife of the late Michael Myers, GP, she was a very intelligent, bridge-playing, socially active woman who enjoyed being with others, spending time with her large family, travelling, eating out and generally enjoying life.
Whilst she retains a sense of humour, demonstrates her good manners at all times and still remembers us most of the time (with 5 'kids' of her own and 9 grandchildren she's entitled to the odd lapse of memory with names!) she is declining rapidly and the nice things we do with her - going out to eat, visiting family, seeing a film etc. - bring increasing anxiety about where she is, where she's going next etc.
We know we can't do anything to help her condition, but we want to help raise awareness and help raise funds for further research and to support others - particularly those without families and friends to visit and provide that much-needed stimulation.
We're not walking far, but please support our little 'Rita's Gang' on this this activity; your contribution will mean a lot!
