As you probably all know our little girl Daniella was born profoundly deaf, picked up via the newborn hearing screen, She was aided at 6 weeks old but it very quickly became apparant that hearing aids were of no use to her as her loss was too severe. I researched and researched extensively and knew that she had to have cochlear implants. at the time only 1 was usually given due to to the current nice guidance so it was a very stressful time as I new she had to have two after finding out so much about how much easier it is to localise sound, we were even talking about remortaging our house to finance it! After a lot of tests and many months we were actually very very lucky to be offered 2 by our local pct. Daniella was implanted bilaterally aged just 11 1/2 months, She is now 4 1/2 just about to start main stream school with statemented TA support, she has weekly visits from her teacher of the deaf and her speech is just amazing, although obviously a little delayed. All the way through our ups and downs the sdcs have supported us, arranged days out to meet other children which is vital as it meant Daniella could meet other hearing impaired children and we could also see children at all stages of the implant process so we knew what to expect in the future, without this it would have been so much more difficult to deal with as we would have been facing the unknown. I am bringing up Daniella to be bilingual to be fluent in both spoken english and BSL (british sign language) and I was very lucky to have had my level 1 funded by the SDCS. They are a absolute lifeline to the children and families who use this service and I would like as many people to sponsor me as possibly so this fabulous charity can continue its great work!!
Thank you :-)
