Gracie was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on her fourth birthday. Nothing prepared us for the journey ahead.
Type 1 diabetes is a life threatening autoimmune condition in which insulin-producing cells in the pancreas cease to work. No one knows why, and there is no cure. It requires a regime of multiple daily injections or pump therapy; blood tests to monitor sugar levels, of which 10 a day are not unusual. Grace has to think about what she eats, drinks and how it will affect her blood sugars. In addition, blood sugars are affected by excitement, stress, exercise and any even minor illnesses. In other words, it’s a moving target. Even the most assiduous make mistakes when a meal contains fewer carbohydrates than estimated, or more, or when something else entirely affects a routine. The threat of getting this wrong and the dire consequences lives with us on a daily basis. Grace must carry a life dependent kit of medication and equipment with her at all times.
Grace is now 11 years old and, as many of you can attest to, she is a poster girl for living life with type 1 diabetes. She has just started senior school and absolutely nothing stops her from enjoying the fullest possible life.
Everyday, I am filled with enormous pride and constantly humbled at how bravely she faces the challenges in front of her and how demanding she is of herself in every facet of her life. She endures the constant vigilance which the condition requires with good humour as well as gratitude for the advances in medicine that enable her (insulin was only created in 1922) to lead a completely normal life.
Unfortunately, the incidence of Type 1 diabetes is on the rise ( particularly in under 5s). Diabetes UK’s mission is to transform the care, work towards the prevention of all forms of diabetes and, ultimately, to help find a cure. It is charities like Diabetes UK which have helped provide invaluable advice and support to families like ours.
Grace was keen for us, as a family, together with a few wonderfully supportive friends, to do the Diabetes UK 10 miles, 12 bridges walk on Sunday 29 September to help raise diabetes awareness and funds for the charity.
We would be incredibly grateful if you would sponsor us and help support the tremendous work of Diabetes UK.
Thank you & much love
