Story
I have done it, 1000km and 600m completed on 30th December 2011. I would like to say it was easy, but it was much harder than I thought it was going to be.
To those who have already sponsored me, thankyou so very very much, for those that haven’t please do, every donation helps..
Background to the challenge
Like many people I like to excercise, and like many people I struggle with the motivation to keep me training through the long winter months. With that in mind, I decided to set myself a running target for the whole of 2011. The distance had to be challenging, but achievable without eating into family life too much. One thousand kilometres sounded like a good round number.
To provide extra motivation, I decided to use the challenge to raise money for charity, and asked the most inspirational woman in my life, my mum, for her choice. She not surprisingly chose the British Lung Foundation.
Why was she so inspirational and why the British Lung Foundation?
Imaging running as fast as you can for as long as you can, your lungs are burning, your head is pounding, you can barely see for the black dots in front of your eyes. Now imagine trying to live your life when you feel like that every second of every day. My mum not only did that, but many people who met her, failed to realise she was ill, let alone the severity of the disease she battled. When she was six, she like many other children caught measles, but unlike most children, it left my mum fighting for her life and with the degenerative lung disease bronchiectasis. A disease which slowly eats away at your lungs, making it difficult to breath and poisening your body with carbon dioxide.
Unfortunately my mum died suddenly in January this year, just as I started the challenge. I am now more determined than ever to complete the 1000km, not only for me but for her, and raise £1000 for the British Lung Foundation, so that other people with these dreadful deseases can also lead a normal life.
