I am going to the Mityana region of Uganda in October for 3 weeks to teach fire safety to children and student teachers.   The district has a population of around 350,000 over 50% of which are under the age of 15.  There is no Fire Service in the area with the nearest appliance in the City of Kampala which is an hour and a half away! 

Many of the children have to board at the schools in wooden dormitories due to the long distance between their schools and villages.  There is no electricity in the dormitories and so candles provide the only light.  Sadly because of the perceived security threat many schools put bars on the windows and lock the dormitories from the outside at night and in just 3 months in 2008 there were 30 fires culminating in 20 child fatalities.

I have to raise £1500 to go towards flights and accommodation and am planning several fund raising events which will be advertised within the next few months and would welcome any donations however small.  Any funds over and above the £1500 target will automatically go to the Mityana Community Foundation and help to provide further education and equipment.
