In 2001 we lost a very special young lady. Tanya Lucy Ray died of a brain tumour at the age of nine, following three years of expert treatment at the Manchester Children's Hospital and The Christie. She died peacefully at Francis House Children's Hospice in Manchester, her family standing strong beside her.

Now it's our turn to fight this devastating disease. Nicole (twin), Caroline (big sister) and Vicki (cousin) are participating in the 2013 Shine half marathon in London on 28 September. This is a night-time walking event that takes in many of the sights the city has to offer, and we will be honoured to walk alongside others in the fight against cancer.

Our fundraising is specifically for research into brain tumours. Every year around 9,100 people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour. They can be hard to treat and around 4,900 people lose their life to the disease every year. The good news is that, in children, brain tumour survival has almost doubled since the late 1960s, but unfortunately less progress has been seen in adults. Cancer Research UK is a major funder of brain tumour research in the UK and we want to see a day when this disease is cured.
