Story

Yorkshire Three Peaks (Y3P) In Memory of Andrea Key and Ian Meek

How hard can it be?

On Friday 22nd April 2022, I am going to attempt to trek the Y3P with my son Greig.

Why?  Because at 61, I want to see if I can still walk the challenging 24.5 miles, and survive, in under 10 hours, and it’s a route I know well and don’t get lost on!

Seriously though, this has a much deeper meaning; it’s a special event in two anniversary years, in memory of two incredible people, both of whom shaped my life and their memory is hugely significant to me.

20 years ago on 26 May 2002, my friend Andrea Key died from an aggressive brain tumour, age 42

10 years ago on 1st August 2012, my friend Ian Meek died from an aggressive brain tumour, age 42

There were so many similarities between Andrea and Ian. After Andrea’s death, her neurosurgeon, me and some of our colleagues from Bradford based Emerald Group Publishing set up a Yorkshire brain tumour charity called Andrea’s Gift in her memory.  Ian was a brain tumour patient and became involved with Andrea’s Gift, where he became an inspirational supporter, passionate advocate and first class fundraiser who raised over £130,000 to fund research in Leeds before his death.

Andrea was a fell walker and her ashes were scattered atop Pen Y Ghent, one of the Y3P.

Ian’s first major fundraising event for Andrea’s Gift was to organise a National 3 Peaks trek, and we trained for that event by walking the Y3P.

Greig has been with me every step of the way with Andrea's Gift and Brain Tumour Research, it seems fitting that he should be the one to chaperone (or drag) me over those three bumps!

I would be grateful if you would sponsor us in this mad challenge that both Andrea and Ian would approve of!
