Story
I’m raising money for the Birmingham Heartlands Neonatal Incubator Appeal by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on 29th July 2019 and would very much appreciate your donations in support.
My son Carlson was born in January 2016 in a very critical condition at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Heartlands. He underwent cooling treatment requiring a specialist incubator on the unit. After nearly 2 weeks of excellent care we were allowed to bring Carlson home. He received fantastic treatment - the doctors, nurses and specialist equipment on the unit ultimately saved Carlson’s life.
Carlson is now 3 years old and doing very well considering the fight for his life in the beginning and some subsequent challenges - every milestone has been a huge victory for our boy. We are eternally grateful to the treatment he received and would love to show our appreciation by fundraising to help the hospital and staff to continue to provide such valuable treatment.
The challenge itself requires a lot of training and preparation. It will take 6 days to reach the 5896 metre summit and then 2 days to descend the mountain. This is going to be physically challenging for me, but is a small challenge in comparison to what my son had to overcome when the odds were against him. Please help to support my challenge and this fantastic cause.
Where do your donations go?
My challenge is all self-funded, so your donations go to charity and not my trip/trek. The Heartlands Hospital Charity has launched a fundraising appeal to bring seven state-of-the-art incubators and omnibeds to hospital's Neonatal Unit, to help staff provide the best possible care for the hospital's most tiny patients. These incubators will not only make it easier for staff to treat babies in a more comfortable way, they will also provide life saving therapeutic hypothermia which helps to reduce the likelihood of brain injury. Please donate to help the hospital provide the best possible care for these babies.
It's important to note that babies from all over the Midlands region and beyond could be transferred to the Heartlands for treatment if required - so your donations help families from a large geographical area, not just those families local to Heartlands itself. Your donations really matter and make a difference - thank you in advance for your kind support.
