Hi everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
8 years ago my mum finally found happiness. She'd met someone whom she planned to spend the rest of her life with. I remember being apprehensive about who this person was but Pete being Pete out of respect asked for my permission to move into the house with my mum and I. It certainly didn't take long for me to find that "father figure" in Pete that I had been missing. I admired him and idolised him. He was my mum's rock, solid and stable and most of all he made her happy.
Fast forward now to the 21st July 2010. I found out he was in hospital after blacking out in a McDonalds Drive through. (I think he was more worried about being caught at McDonalds..) After several tests they discovered a brain tumour and suddenly everything changed in a heart beat. At that point in my life, I had no idea what a Glioblastoma Grade 4 was. Cancer wasn't something that I'd ever really thought of, it was just something that happened to other people. But it was happening and at first I was in denial. Pete had two Craniotomies in 14 days and the doctors were impressed with how quickly he had recovered from such major surgery. I hoped that perhaps age was on his side. That he could beat cancer. He had radiation and chemotherapy over the next few months. At first the tumours shrank, but then they came back with avengence. The doctors were surprised as to how abnormally aggressive the tumours were. His headaches were debilitating and the side affects started to show. Pete carried us through it all with his humour and strength. He was stoic for us, but only God knows the pain he truly felt. Sadly on the 27th April 2011 Pete passed away surrounded by his family in the comfort and care of Hibiscus Coast Hospice. Glioblastoma won the battle and even though we knew for 9 months, nothing prepares you for when they take their last breath. Not a day goes by when I don't think about it.
Tash and I have decided to run this 10k in honour and memory of Pete. We chose "Brain Tumour Research" because brain tumours are the least talked about type of cancer although one of the biggest killers and is under funded compared to other types of cancer. Although we're not running a marathon, we are trying to do our bit to raise awareness about brain tumours which are so difficult to diagnose and treat.
