Story
Hi there. My name’s Tom. I’m undertaking a unique social photography project called Captured Earth; a project which spawned from a few scribbles on a piece of paper in early 2014 into something that I’ve left my livelihood behind to carry out. It’s something I’m very passionate about bringing to life and fulfilling, so let me tell you a little bit about it.
What is Captured Earth?
First and foremost, Captured Earth is a photography project. It is an 18 month journey to capture and showcase over 1000 photographic stories of humanity from people in 50+ countries around the world. Think of it as a continually evolving online visual collage showcasing some of the raw elements of humanity that exist inside every one of us, no matter what our age, wealth, sex, religion, race or where we live. The photographic short stories are published daily on the project's website (www.CapturedEarth.com) and shared around on the various social networks.
Secondly, the project can be seen as a bit of a social experiment. Using social media, the project is designed to fully involve you and others by offering unique ways in which you can interact with it, such as you deciding where I travel to next and you telling me what I should do in different locations. Tied in with this, I will be undertaking various charitable initiatives along the way for Oxfam. I also hope to document some of the fantastic projects Oxfam are involved in around the world.
In a way I like to think of Captured Earth as much a social experiment as it is a photography project.
Where will it travel to?
Over the 18 months, the project will travel to over 50 countries, starting in the UK and spanning east across Europe and Central Asia before heading down through South East Asia and eventually ending up in my homeland of New Zealand. Although this is the vague direction of travel, the finer details of the itinerary are up to you, as you will decide the destinations visited along the way.
Finally…
I’m very passionate about bringing this unique project to life. Having you involved, whether it be helping choose where I travel to or just simply sharing some of the photographic stories with others on social media, you’re already doing more than I ever hoped in helping it achieve something, and I truly thank you for this.
I appreciate you for taking the time to have a look at what Captured Earth is all about. On the project's website (www.CapturedEarth.com) you will find more information on what the project entails.
Finally, I hope you enjoy following and engaging with this unique project as much as I enjoy bringing it to you!
Take care and who knows, maybe I’ll see you at some point along the journey :).
