Story
On April 14th 2022 we lost our dad (Tadhg) to very rare form of cancer. Anyone who knew him, would have known how fit and healthy he was. So when he was diagnosed with cancer and we were told he only had a couple of weeks left, our worlds shattered.
Over the last year people have described him as “A true gentleman”, “A role model”, a man with “Heart of gold”. But to us he was so much more. He was the most caring loving person, who always put everyone else’s needs above his own, especially when it came to family.
At the age 6, I made a promise to Dad, that one day we would climb Mount Kilimanjaro together. Of course at the time, I had no idea what I’d signed myself up for. But it was a promise we both held onto tightly, over the years as I grew up.
In December 2021, 6 weeks before he was diagnosed, we finally agreed to make that dream come true! We had agreed in September 2023, we’d finally embark on this long awaited dream.
I remember talking to dad when he was in the hospital and he told me “To go chase my dream and go live my life”. He told us, he had lived a “wonderful life” and now it was our turn.
That night I promised dad that one day I’d climb Kilimanjaro and live out that dream we had both shared, because a promise is a promise!
Therefore this September, I will be flying out to Tanzania and embarking on a 8 Day trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in memory of Dad. I will be carrying a photo of him, up to the summit, as I know how excited he was for us to share this adventure.
I will be raising money for Christie’s Charity (The charity ran by Christie’s Hospital, where dad was an inpatient for 7 weeks before passing away. The money raised will help fund cancer research and addition treatments which are not funded by the NHS. Donations will also go towards building incredible facilities for patients and their families to enjoy together, whilst at the hospital.
As someone who works in healthcare, I can honestly say, the care dad received was above and beyond. We could not be more grateful as a family to all the staff within the hospital that made sure dad was comfortable and helped us make some final memories together.
On behalf of the O’Mahony family, thank you to anyone who is able to donate in memory of Tadhg.
And a little friendly reminder: Always remember to tell someone how much You Love Them. As you never know when it’s going to be the last time you can say it
