Story
In the past 30 years I’ve been to Paraguay with David Attenborough, sailed around the world and learned the names of every capital city on Earth. OK, only the last one is true, but I experienced the other two because I was able to immerse myself in a good Talking Book.
RNIB’s Talking books allow me to travel across centuries, explore different cultures and get inside the minds of various characters.
I’ve been totally blind since birth but I’m rarely without at least two books on various devices. But only 10 percent of any book published is put into an alternative format such as audio, so children and adults often miss out on reading all the things their friends do.
This is where the Canton and Ely Talking Books Challenge can help.
I would love everyone to get involved - local businesses, community groups, book groups, organisations and individuals who would like to join together to raise funds for the Canton and Ely Talking Book. Anybody can take part and you can do any kind of fundraising.
If just ten people pledge to raise or donate £150 – that’s enough to fund a whole children’s Talking Book!
Once my target of £1500 (or higher) has been reached, a book will be chosen and recorded with a dedication acknowledging the generosity of the community in Canton and Ely. This will be played at the start of the book each time somebody downloads it and the book will remain in the RNIB library for all to enjoy for many years to come.
It costs RNIB £2500 to produce an adult book and £1500 for a children's book so please help RNIB change the story for blind and partially sighted people.
A world without talking books would be a very silent place for someone like me.
