Story
6 years ago I hadn’t cycled for more than 10 miles at a time. Today, I’m 13km from the top of the Alps, cycling solo from UK,. Cycling has opened doors for me, brought me new friends, almost certainly made my journey through cancer more manageable, and now has inspired me to take a year off work to cycle East, meeting people I would otherwise never have met, connecting in a way that wouldn’t be possible were I to be passing through on a car or by plane. It also shows that slow travel, using just your body, can be done, even by a not very fit 60 year old woman. And, perhaps above all, it’s a climate friendly way to travel,
Already I can see the difference in the way countries treat cyclists. The UK has wonderful landscapes, but is shameful in the poor infrastructure it provides, deterring many, with good reason, from taking advantage of such an empowering, liberating and exhilarating form of travel - all for free. Cycling UK is a voice for us all, pushing for cycling to be taken seriously, and cyclists to be safe. Please support it. Thank you.
