Story
Charlotte Rosenfeld is a typical kid who loves to hang out with her best friends, delves into YouTube videos, and loves ice cream. The only not-so-obvious difference is Charlotte has to visit Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Upstate’s BI-LO Charities Children’s Cancer Center (BCCCC) for hematology treatments due to idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, or ITP. ITP is an immune disorder where platelets - cells that help blood clot - are at unusually low levels.
Diagnosed in June 2010 at the age of three with chronic ITP, Charlotte has adopted a life of caution to ensure that she doesn’t experience any situation that requires immediate or rapid blood clotting. Chronic ITP lasts six months or longer. Common signs her platelet count is low include nosebleeds and easy bruising.
As a Children’s Hospital hematology/oncology patient, Charlotte has been under the care of several doctors and specialists. She and her family have grown very fond of the physicians, nurses, and staff and found comfort from Child Life Specialists who have continuously provided support. As a patient, Charlotte has had the opportunity to attend Camp Courage for the past eight years where she has a full week to interact with other BCCCC patients dealing with blood and cancer diseases.
“We have loved our family [at Children’s Hospital] and have really seen the hospital grow! Over time, they have enhanced the Children’s Hospital to make it so much more friendly. But, honestly, our favorite thing is the people. They understand how hard it is. They make it okay [for you to] cry, feel angry, or [have] whatever other emotion takes place. They also know how hard it is on a child. We have always had a great experience and Charlotte loves her nurses, doctors, and child life specialists,” says Charlotte’s mother, Jennifer Rosenfeld.
Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Upstate Camps
Our camps provide psychosocial support in the form of recreational and educational programs for children, adolescents, and young adults living with an illness. The camps allow them to share similar experiences with peers while participating in activities that promote normal development and encourages age-appropriate coping with the challenges they face.
Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Upstate runs four camps:
Camp Buddy for patients with diabetes
Camp Cary’s Kids for supportive care and medically complex patients
Camp Courage for patients living with cancer or a blood disorder
Camp Luv-a-Lung for patients with respiratory problems
Support our camps with a donation!
Funds raised for our camp programs through this year's Radiothon will be used for scholarships for patients to go to our four camps giving them the opportunity to be kids and share experiences with other kids facing the same challenges they do!
