As a challenge and a promise we will be walking 600km from Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela along ancient pilgrimage routes ; Camino del Norte and Camino Primitivo. Claire and Margaret are both 60 this year and this is a fitting way to mark the year. Andrew, John’s brother and Ann his wife are in their 60s and the four of us are taking on this challenge walking 20 - 25 kms each day carrying our rucksacks with all our stuff! Follow our progress on our public Facebook page “Caminar con Amigos” - which means to walk with friends.
John died from MND in 2019 aged 57, two and a half years following diagnosis. Over that time he lost the use of his legs, arms, voice, swallowing and breathing. It really is a cruel illness for anyone to have and for family to see. He would have loved to do this long walk. We did one of the shorter Caminos in 2015 over one week, and we drove from Bilbao to Santiago in 2018 with John. The feeling of entering the central square in Santiago is just awe inspiring.
We are walking to remember and to support those currently living with MND. That will keep us going. The money raised will be divided between research and supporting communication technology. John was able to bank his voice, use this in speech apps and later to use an eye gaze computer. We want this to be available to all who need it.
Our fundraising journey began in 2017 in Letchworth Garden City with our linked Just Giving page Letchworth Walks to d’Feet MND. You can read the start of our journey there.
If you want to match our miles one day by walking the equivalent of that days miles from wherever you are, let us know. That would be amazing. It doesn’t have to be the longest day!!
