On the 19th May 2021, we received the most devastating news that Callum, at the age of 27, had stage 4 gastro-oesophageal cancer.
Prior to this Cal was extremely healthy; regularly climbing mountains and running half marathons.
Oesophageal cancer effects 9000 people per year in the UK, who are all mostly over the age of 75. The cruellest most unimaginable thing about this cancer is that by the time you get symptoms, the cancer is advanced.
The Christies supported our family very early on in Cals journey, being the only beacon of hope we could find. We regularly attended the hospital to meet with a leading Professor who was watching over Cal on his journey and providing support and understanding to the whole family, whilst exploring all and any treatment options that were available (but also very minimal for this cancer).
With the help of The Christie’s, Cal fought the disease until the very end and sadly passed away after 12 months due to his cancer being too aggressive and becoming resistant to treatment very quickly.
Something Cal always said (and we all knew) was that if it was a battle of the mind, he would of won at the start. He had unbelievable mental strength and such a positive outlook, always thinking of others before himself and wanting to help others around him.
The Oesophago-Gastric Research Fund work towards finding more treatment options and potentially curative measures for this specific cancer, with the hope that in the future, people in Cals position will be given a better outlook.
