Story
One month ago, a friend and colleague in the army detachment which I am a member, unexpectedly and suddenly passed away.
The last thing we talked about, the day before his death, was the upcoming adventure I have been plotting with my wife, Kirst.
After deliberation we have decided to use our adventure to raise money for the soldier’s charity (the Army Benevolent Fund). For over 75 years it has supported army members (active and retired) and their families whenever they are in need. This need continues in spite of, and because of, coronavirus.
We had planned four months off working as junior doctors as a delayed honeymoon to travel to Nepal and Europe. However, due to Covid-19 were unable to go and were asked to continue working in the local
hospital. Whilst then recovering from Covid ourselves we decided to explore our own backyard, and planned the following endurance ‘triathlon’…
1. Run the 154km West Highland Way finishing in Fort William (Kirst is now unfortunately unable to run due to a hip injury, so will be mountain biking)
2. Cycle from Fort William to the North Coast 500 near Applecross and then following the NC500 route around the coast to Inverness. This will be roughly 800km
3. Finally kayak the 100km Great Glen Way from Inverness back to Fort William.
The plan is to start this Sunday 12th July (travelling back home at the end of each day initially to honour coronavirus restrictions). We hope it'll take 12 days, especially after the wonderful Voom nutrition kindly donated fuel to keep us going.
We are not sure if we’ll manage it (but will have fun trying). We have decided to support a cause close to our hearts in taking on this huge challenge. Please share in our adventure, be inspired to discover adventure on your doorstep, and please consider giving to the Soldiers Charity.
Thank you!
