Story
Sullivan’s Heroes is a charity offering support and financial assistance for families raising essential funds for vital home adaptations for a disabled child, to continue to care for their child at home, safely and with dignity.
Caleb is a bright, sociable 9 year old who has Cerebral Palsy. In the last four years Caleb has undergone Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery and two hip reconstructions. These surgeries were necessary in order to work towards being able to carry out standing transfers. Caleb has found the last few years difficult as he has prepared for and recovered from these surgeries but now that they are over he can see the progress and is working hard with his Physiotherapy to build up the strength in his core and leg muscles.
Caleb thrives when he develops new skills. He is fully reliant on his wheelchairs for his mobility. Currently, Caleb cannot easily access the ground floor of his own home independently. He requires us to carry him upstairs to the bathroom and to his bedroom as well as to manoeuvre him around the often bulky equipment he uses for Physio.
Our aim is to create a home where he has a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor and full access to the kitchen, dining and living areas where he can improve his mobility and begin to learn independence skills for life such a making his own breakfast, food preparation, tidying up, preparing his equipment for school etc. All the things you would expect a 9 year old to be able to do but can't because of the layout of the house.
These self care skills are vital to his motivation, emotional development and confidence as he approaches his teenage years. We have been able to secure most of the finances to cover the building work to make this happen but we need approximately £15000 to complete the work.
