We help veterans and their families to live the life they deserve after service

Story

I served in the Armed Forces (Royal Corps of Signals) from 1973 until 1997. Joining as a boy soldier I trained at the Apprentices College in Harrogate and completed my Trade Training in Catterick in 1974.

During my 24 years service my postings included Germany, UK (York, Imphal Barracks), Hong Kong, Northern Ireland, Falkland Islands, and finishing at Leeds University Officer Training Corps as a Permanent Staff Instructor, Royal Signals Wing. I have lived and worked in the York area since retiring.

Having seen operational service myself, I know how important it is for soldiers to receive the necessary help and support particularly when they have received life changing injuries. I now want to be able to help and support these servicemen and ex-servicemen through the Help for Hero's Charity, and raise as much money as I can, with the help of friends and family for this important cause.

My training for the half marathon started late last year, and although I've always been a keen runner I have never tackled long distances. With a minor set back in the New Year with a knee and hamstring injury, the running has being going really well now.

I have been doing a combination of middle distance running, 4, 6, 8 miles runs and then extending it to 10 and the full distance of 13miles, with hill training thrown in for good measure. I'm currently running between twenty and thirty miles per week, and as well as this I have also been swimming up to two miles or one to one and a half hours in the pool per session with some gym work.

My main focus is getting the miles in the legs and running the full distance over tough courses. I took part in the Great North 10k run on the 5th July and came 547th overall and 8th in my gender/age group out of a field of over 5000 runners.

I have to achieve a minimum total of £375 for the Help for Hero's charity, but my aim is to raise as much as I can by the cut-off in mid October. A huge thank you in advance to you all for helping me with your kind donations, very much appreciated by me and the Help for Hero's Team.

The Great North run is on Sunday the 13th September. Look out for me on the telly, I'll be at the front!
