We use surfing and peer mentoring to transform the lives of young people

Story

My name is Cliff Lee. I am a North Devon based artist. In August 2013, aged 39 years old I suffered a major stroke, losing the use of my right arm and leg, the tools of my trade. I have taught myself to create new artistic pieces with my left hand, producing increasingly detailed abstract work of the local North Devon area. Some of them are my most important memories as a surfer, which was my great passion.

Since the stroke it has been very difficult to surf or access the beaches. Until 2019 when the Stroke Association gave me a life changing opportunity to have adaptive surfing at Croyde beach with The Wave Project team.  It was a dream come true.

The Croyde Wave Project team have been amazing, in the session it takes an instructor and 3 volunteers to support me while I get my fix of the sea. Last year for the first time I managed to get to stand up on a surfboard, which I thought would never be possible again. It’s been an incredible journey and the benefits of having these sessions and support has made such a difference to my life, mentally and physically. As I no longer have use of my right arm and can only walk short distances with a crutch

So the wild crazy Tri Challenge 2022 of giving back to the Wave project was something  I felt very compelled and driven to do.

My team and I are going to fundraise by biking 10 miles, a 2 mile open water swim from Saunton to Croyde and then 1 mile walk to the finish line.

Cliff Lee’s Tri team are Vanessa Charles who (who’s family have also been helped by The Wave project and volunteers) Cliffs brother’s Darren and Russ Lee, plus additional friends and family, Ali Lee, Duncan Godfrey, Nick Grimshaw, Chris Power and Natalie Fairlie.
