There are over 850,000 people currently living with dementia in the UK. More than 520,000 of those suffer from Alzheimer's disease. My granddad was one of the people.
Alzheimer's is a physical disease which affects the brain. Proteins build up in the brain which causes the loss of connections between nerve cells, and eventually to the death of nerve cells and loss of brain tissue. It is because of this that I saw my Granddad become less independent, eventually losing his capability to walk and communicate. Seeing such a kind man and intelligent man being robbed of his ability was heartbreaking; something I wish no one had to go through, unfortunately they do.
Unfortunately there is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease however current treatments include helping to boost the levels of chemical messengers in the brain, which can help with some of the symptoms.
I'm running in the Cardiff Half Marathon as it will take perseverance and dedication, something my Granddad held in high esteem. The money I raise through your sponsorship will help go towards treatment, or the many other ways that Alzheimer's society are helping those with Alzheimer's such as support groups or specialised nurses.
Thank you to everyone who has donated already; I'm honoured by the support you have shown me.
