Story
Team BTP will cycle 100 miles per day over 9 days from John O'Groats to Lands End, in the saddle for 7-8 hours per day commencing on 3rd May 2014, all in support of Samaritans!
Samaritans supports people who are struggling to cope, round the clock every day of the year. All calls are supported by their local volunteers in local branches across the UK. Every call costs them £3.83 to answer so they need your support to continue to provide their crucial service.
Every single day, around 16 people decide to end their own life across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Samaritans service can help people before it's too late.
In January 2010 a pioneering Samaritans and Network Rail partnership launched covering the rail network in England, Scotland and Wales.
The overall aim is to reduce the number of suicides on the railways by 20% over a 5 year period.
Cycling 975 miles in 9 days, that is the challenge that a team from BTP are attempting in early May.
This challenge normally takes 12 days and is often ridden South to North to allow for prevailing winds and late summer is the best time for the weather and obviously it is still a serious challenge for an experienced rider.
The BTP team however are riding North to South in very early May when there is still a chance of snow in the far North and with a team who have a mixed experience including some who have not yet ridden 100 miles in one day let alone 9 consecutive days.
This is not a relay event and each of the riders is aiming to ride every mile from John O Groats to Lands End, a personal challenge for each rider and an opportunity to support the Samaritans in their valuable work.
The team are:
Mark Newton, Alex Carson, Mike Furness, Paul Green, Stewart Cleverly, Hugh Borgeat, Ian Swift, Paul Watts, Paul Brogden
