Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
The challenge I am taking on is going to be a huge mental and physical one for me. The event is called Man vs Lakes and more details can be found at https://ratracemanvslakes.co.uk/ including details of the route. This is only fitting considering the challenges people suffering with cancer are going through. I will be attempting to run/walk/crawl my way from Silverdale (near Morecambe) all the way to Coniston village in the lake district (on the north end of Coniston Water). This will involve crossing the tidal Morecambe Bay with quicksands and river channels. Climbing from the coast up and over the hills of the lake district. If that's not enough I will then be, swimming and Kayaking sections of two lakes!! The route will be 28+ miles (they won't know the exact route until the day due to the tidal bay) and over 4400 ft of elevation (that's only 200ft short of climbing Ben Nevis!). I have nine and a half hours to complete the course, but only six and a half to reach 21.5 miles. I have completed a 22-mile event in six hours, however I was in agony at this point. At this point, I will still have another 6+ miles to go before the end!
The reason for this is, as some of you will know (and others won't), I lost my Father to Lung cancer and more recently my auntie (my dad's sister) to ovarian cancer. What most of you will not know is that, this is only my recent losses. I lost both my grandparents (on my mum's side) to cancer as well, within 18 months of each other. My Nanna passed with bowel cancer and then my grandad passed with stomach cancer.
This is just my direct family and when we include my wife's family, we now add breast cancer to this list. My wife's cousin is currently fighting this disease, having only had her latest child a matter of months before the diagnosis.
With all this in mind, I decided I couldn't pick a charity dedicated to a single cancer type. Cancer is becoming more common and now affects 1 in 2 people!
