Story
As many of you know, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last summer. To say that it was a momumental life changing event is an understatement. Diabetes is something though, which is very close to the hearts of my family - my Dad recently celebrated 70 years of living with Type 1 diabetes . He was diagnosed in the 1940s when diabetes management was rudimentary at best.
Type 1 diabetes is an often misunderstood condition - it is a chronic autoimmune disease where your body decides to kick its own butt and kill off the insulin producing cells in your pancreas. Insulin regulates our blood glucose levels and is needed to convert glucose into energy. Type 1 diabetics are required to inject insulin daily and constantly monitor their blood glucose levels to ensure that they remain within a normal range (it is very much harder in practice than it sounds on paper!) Type 1 diabetes is one of the only diseases where a person is responsible for dosing alone, a drug which can kill them - we do this every day, multiple times per day and will do this for the rest of our lives...unless we can find a prevention and cure.
JDRF is the UK's leading charity for Type 1 diabetes - they do fantastic research into the prevention and cure of Type 1 diabetes. They also provide education and support to thousands of Type 1 diabetics and their caregivers in the UK.
I am walking in the JDRF One Walk in September this year to help raise money for JDRF so that they continue to do the fantastic stuff they do every day.
I will also be walking with my diabestie Katie (an old hand at this T1D thing) who has provided so much awesome advice and support - not sure I would have gotten through the last year without her.
I would appreciate anything that you might be able to contribute to the vital work that JDRF does for the pancreatically challenged!
