Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi! My name is Brogan and I'm a recent graduate from the University of Lincoln. I am embarking on a trek up to Machu Picchu to raise money for MIND, and also to raise awareness for invisible disabilities and Hypermobility syndromes. I have spent my life being limited by Hypermobility Syndrome, which gave me a childhood of hospital visits and frustration. It also gave me the drive to prove that I can accomplish whatever I set my mind and efforts to. I have always wanted to take on a challenge to raise money for a good cause, and until recently have been unable to due to my health.

I have decided to take the leap, and have accepted the challenge of a 6 day trek up Machu Picchu to raise money for MIND, the mental health charity, who do crucial work providing advice and support across the country to anyone experiencing a mental health problem. I will also be using the trek to raise awareness for the HMSA, and to inspire people to keep going, keep pushing, and keep fighting the limitations of disability as well as mental health.

5 years ago, I was constantly in and out of hospital, struggling to keep up with school work and a social life due to my health. Its upsetting and frustrating wanting to go out and do things, but being stuck with your body unable to keep up and in 24/7 pain. It's a constant battle to stay positive despite the pain, the multiple misdiagnosis, and the lack of understanding. You can't always stay positive. Depression and mental health problems ever-loom and although I always appeared to be coping, it is not possible all of the time. MIND does incredible work, providing advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem, and campaigning to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding around mental health.

I want to help fight. I want to prove I can beat it, that we can all beat it together. People need to be more aware of disability, and the wider issues which surround it. I want to help to raise awareness and inspire people with disabilities, and also to support MIND in the necessary work they do. Mental health and disability affect a huge number of people. You will almost certainly know many people affected by at least one of these issues. Please donate anything you can to help this wonderful charity, and thank you in advance for your contributions.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity. The challenge has been organised by choose a Challenge, and at least 50% of all donations will go directly to MIND. The other part will enable the challenge, and give me the opportunity to raise awareness for the HMSA also.
