We are Team Bobsleigh Brad, Great Britain's number one bobsleigh crew.
For the 2020/21 IBSF World Cup season (just one year out from the Olympics), our unbelievably generous sponsors have facilitated an opportunity for us to be #charitybob.
In a nutshell, bobsleigh is an incredibly expensive sport. With sleds and equipment costing in excess of £100,000, extensive living costs on season plus freighting equipment around the world etc, we need a lot of funds to run. Because of this, advertising space on our sleds comes at a premium, normally with figures rising into the tens of thousands of pounds.
This year is different, however. We are living through unprecedented times and few have been hit harder during the COVID pandemic than charities. To this end, and after discussions with our sponsors, we came up with the idea to be charity bob. We would compete for the entire 2020/21 IBSF World Cup season as a charity-focused sled, with our commercial sponsors kindly stepping back and allowing their normal logo space to be replaced with a charity. The charities chosen were all organisations close to the hearts of our crew members plus a collective partnership with the NHS. All of us have JustGiving pages tied to our personal charities and all have the goal of raising £500 each for our causes.
As mentioned, our team collectively has the honour of representing the NHS.
The incredible frontline staff of the NHS continue to put their lives on the line fighting the Covid pandemic. To the initiated, the NHS has forever been a national point of pride and a privileged system of healthcare that makes us the envy of the world. That has changed now. No-one needs to be initiated to know the scope, depth and sheer sacrifice of the wonderful staff that work there. They fix us, they care for us, they save us. And, until recently, saw very little recognition for their efforts.
Whilst the world has changed, for the time being at least, these people show up day in, day out at enormous risk to themselves and continue to care for our most sick and vulnerable.
It brings us immense joy and pride that they've agreed to partner with us in promoting this initiative. We hope we can do a small thing to raise some money for them and represent that iconic blue logo proudly as we hurtle down the ice.
To all at the NHS, for the past, the present and the future:
Thank you.
From, the lads at British Bobsleigh.
