Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and supporting myself, Matty Clayton, Simon Staples, Mark Ross, Chris Johnson, Jonathan Knox, Rob Liddle  and Eddie Turnbull on our Bridge to Bridge charity bike ride.

On the 15th November 2009 I was blessed with the birth of my first daughter Ava Grace Turnbull and what joy she brought to my life.

Heartbreakingly on the 24th January 2010 Ava Grace was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and was transferred to The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle were she underwent several months of intense Chemotherapy. Despite the challenges thrown at Ava she battled through the sickness and numerous operations and at the beginning of March 2010 we were given the great news that the Leukaemia was in remission.

The happiness soon turned to sadness as in April 2010 we were told the Leukaemia had returned and that Ava’s only chance of surviving the cancer was to have a bone marrow transplant.

After several months of searching for a suitable donor a stem cell match was found and the transplant was given the go ahead bringing a sense of hope to everyone in Ava’s life.

The transplant process was started in August 2010 and again Ava suffered sickness and numerous complications and was eventually transferred to Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. Things continued to deteriorate and Ava’s organs soon started to fail and she was placed on life support.

On the 28th September 2010 my worst fears were realised and we were given the news that no parent wants and that a decision had to be made on whether to continue with the life support or to bring Ava’s suffering to an end.

Ava Grace passed away later that day leaving an un-repairable hole in everyone’s hearts.

2020 was the 10th anniversary of Ava’s passing and a group of good friends and I (#Team Ava)  decided to raise  money in Ava’s memory for Blood Cancer UK by riding from the Transporter Bridge on Teesside to Tower Bridge, London covering 322 miles over 4 days.

Unfortunately due to the covid 19 pandemic the ride in 2020 was postponed and we are now riding the 322 miles between 4th August 2021 and 7th August 2021 .

We have set our target at £5000 and would be grateful if you could help us reach this. Any donation, no matter how small can help a difference and help beat blood cancer once and for all.
