Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We are running to raise money for Myelopathy.org because of our own experience with Cervical Myelopathy. As some of you may know, last August, Brett fell and in doing so squeezed and crushed his spinal cord which led to various horrible things including not being able to walk properly or use his left hand! Things very quickly got worse, and he was told that if he didn’t have any intervention he would likely end up in a wheelchair in a couple of years! So he ended up going for emergency spinal surgery in November 2021. They were very clear when he had the surgery that he may not get any better, but that the purpose of the surgery was to make sure he did not get worse - but still, we crossed our fingers that he would improve. Thankfully.. he did! With a few wobbles a long the way, he was instantly better, although in a lot of pain (the pain unfortunately is still a big problem!). Thank you to the spinal team at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham for your amazing work.
He is still not fixed, far from it. They say it can take up to two years for nerves to recover, but Brett is determined to fight hard to improve his chances. He walks mostly normally now (unless he is really tired!) and still has pain, but he has set a goal of running the half marathon in September - not a small feat!
We did our first run today (06/05/2022). Now, luckily I (Danni) haven’t had any spinal surgery so I did 5k. However, Brett is having to literally re train his legs to run.. he did 30 minutes of 1 minute running with 1 minute walking, and honestly, the improvement is incredible from where he was a couple of months ago! So it’s only upward from here.
We will keep you all up to date with our progress, for whether you wish to donate, or just because you want a nose!!
We are raising money for myelopathy.org as they provide support for people going through similar experiences to Brett. Unfortunately, cervical myelopathy isn’t something that is well published or publicised so support is limited. Brett is now an ambassador the charity aswell. We would be extremely grateful for any money you could donate towards this cause, which means a lot to us personally. And if you can’t afford to donate, just a wish for us to actually finish!!
Thank you all for taking the time to read our story!
